The reserve Bosque Protector Palo Seco was established after the publication of his statement in the Official Gazette on 24 November 1983.

Created to be a conservation corridor linking Fortuna Forest Reserve and La Amistad International Park, the Palo Seco Protected Forest, an area estimated on 167.410 hectares, is located in the province of Bocas del Toro.

The topography seen in the area is due to the central mountain range, which runs along the western half of the country from west to east, with altitudes higher than 3,000 meters above sea level.

In the region are important watersheds, such as of rivers Changuinola, Chico, Chiriqui, Chiriqui Viejo, Cricamola and Fonseca. These rivers are among the largest rivers in the country.
